Timetable World has completed publishing the full set of 339 Great Britain and regional railway timetables 1948 - 2020. The ERTs from 2007 are free downloads. The GB timetables 1974-2007 are available to purchase and download as searchable PDF files @ £10 each. The Regional timetables 1948-1973 are £6 each.

A semi-rural part of north-west England. Because of its good page size in comparison to the smaller size later editions, I have always kept my copy of the British Rail timetable 1st June 1981 to 16th May 1982 (1280pp and 4pp card cover) to hand in the railway archives section of my study.

There is some information, including pictures and a few diagrams, in Brian Haresnape's book"British Rail 1948-78 - A Journey by Design", published in 1979 by Ian Allan, ISBN 0 7110 0982 1. Not comprehensive, but will give you some idea of things.

The hon. Gentleman is right that British Rail operated the railway on a shoestring at relatively low cost, but in doing so it built up a tremendous legacy of under-investment and disregard for safety risk, the terrible consequences of which we saw only too clearly in the late 1990s and the early years of this century.

The Fens. A cornerstone of government department file retention is the 30 years rule. Nearly all departmental files more than 30 years old will either be with the National Archives or destroyed. British Rail privatisation is now almost 30 years ago, and privatisation of Travellers Fare is more than 30 years ago.

By now just about everything built under British Rail has passed the 30-year-old mark, some going strong, others not so strong. I've knocked together a quick list which should exclude units currently running but under imminent replacement such as the old Merseyrail EMUs, or in their final few months/weeks of operation like the 321s at Greater Anglia (100% accuracy not guaranteed).
