Hi I purchased a washing machine last year and haven't really considered using Calgon or a descaling product until yesterday when someone suggested putting vinegar in my Stainless Steel kettle, which I did and to my surprise, came out new this morning.

I've never used Calgon before and the washing machine has lasted for about 6/7 years. Only today have I discovered a large pool of water.

I bought the HG Service Engineer product from Lakeland recently but when I asked about suitability for use with a septic tank they said that they had not been specifically informed that it was or was not suitable for use with a septic tank.

A washine machine engineer from Hotpoint told me not to waste money on Calgon. We do use a Sainsbury's washing machine cleaner every so often, empty drum and hot 95 wash.

Do you use Calgon in your washing machine or does it not seem very money saving to you? And maybe someone has a plumber for a husband who can verify that Calgon really does prolong the life of a WM. Or do you think our good old washing soda and vinegar would do just as good a job?? All opinions welcome. Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01.

Cleaning a washing machine. MimiJane Posts: 7,967 Forumite. 19 November 2004 at 9:20PM. I'm sure I've read on this board that vinegar can be used as a descaler for washing machines by running it through one cycle (a bit less expensive than Calgon ::)).

DON'T use Calgon! I thought I'd post this, as they are running a big TV advertising campaign in London atm and OH gets annoyed every time they show it. The advert shows a washing machine with its heating element totally furred up and destroyed by water deposits. According to OH, who was trained by one of the biggest washing machine firms and ...

We bought a rubbish Hoover washing machine about 3 years ago, two days before the warranty expired it died. It had a badly furred up heater element and the engineer blamed our water, although I'd never had this problem with previous machines. We now use a cheap washing machine cleaner about 3 times a year which works so far.
