Take betahistine exactly as your doctor tells you to. It is usual to take one 16 mg tablet three times a day at first. Once your symptoms are under control, your doctor may then reduce your dose to one 8 mg tablet three times a day. You will find the directions for taking the tablets on the label of the pack to remind you about what the doctor ...

Betahistine is regarded as a remarkably safe drug with minimal side effects. It may cause a bit of gastric irritation, especially at higher doses, but that can be managed with Gaviscon and / or the occassional proton pump inhibitor eg omeprazole. Finally 70% of sufferers get better some after months, but for some it takes years.

All that said, I've been taking betahistine on and off since 2013 as needed and I've had no problems with it except drowsiness. I have been on 3x24mg betahistine since 2007. I tried to wean myself off of it and it caused my Meniere's to become bilateral. So my good ear became my bad ear 😦.

I have bilateral MD and I have non allergic rhinitis. I have been on 64mg/day betahistine AND a nasal spray antihistamine + nasal spray steroid for years. The betahistine works wonderfully well. I have eliminated both my MD symptoms and my non allergic rhinitis symptoms with this combination. Below is the protocol I follow every day.

The dose of betahistine is crucial. First it takes about 4 weeks to reach full effectiveness. Second I was started on 16mg tds which seemed to help with some reversal of hearing loss and reduction in tinnitus to a tolerably low level but it did not prevent acute attacks. Betahistine is a medicine that is thought to increase the blood flow around the inner ear. This may reduce the amount of fluid inside the labyrinth and prevent symptoms from developing. If you take betahistine every day it is unlikely to stop all attacks but it may reduce the number and/or severity of attacks. It does not work in all cases.

Insurance does not cover betahistine. Here in Pittsburgh 300 16mg capsules will cost you around $130.00 and higher. Also, do NOT take any ORAL antihistamines with betahistine. You can take an antihistamine SPRAY into the nose only. That will not neutralize the betahistine because it does not go through your blood system.

Posted 8 years ago. Betahistine usually takes couple days get into system but once they are you should notice improvement. I too take the 16mg tablets but only at onset of attack then they usually work within couple hours. My GP also gave me prochlorperazine maleate which have to be dissolved on gum.

About betahistine. Ménière's disease is a condition of the inner ear. It typically causes attacks of dizziness with a spinning sensation (vertigo), hearing loss and noises in the ear (tinnitus). The attacks can vary in severity, and in how often they occur. It is thought that a build-up of fluid in the inner ear causes the symptoms.

Vertigo symptoms. Vertigo can last just for a short period of time (seconds to minutes) or can last for hours or even days. It can be accompanied by a feeling of ear fullness, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), sickness (nausea) and balance problems, which can interfere with daily activities. Vertigo can also cause a person to be sick (vomit).
