There was a thread about this same question some time back, and there was a lack of consensus among native English speakers as to which form is acceptable. But I would say that the following are correct, or at least commonly used. My favorite animal is the dog. My favorite animal is dogs. Dogs are my favorite animal.

One expression would be a variation on the other, but there is no consensus as to which one came first, it seems. Some people say 'can't be asked' is a decaf version of 'can't be arsed', but other people say that the latter was made up whereas the former was the original one. 'Can't be arsed' is BE.

Senior Member. This seems to be something specific to China. There are some pages discussing it but they are mostly in Chinese so I don't know what they say: 深圳地铁里面的LOD-COOL和HL-COOL是什么的缩写呢?. - 知乎. Consensus seems to be that LOD = Level of Detail and HL = High Level but that doesn't seem like good English to me.

In my experience"have a nice day" is not used as a standard email ending in the way that"regards" is used (or some variant of"regards"). However, it is fine as a personal ending, but if"Have a nice day" is fine, then most other personal endings are also fine, such as (when appropriate)"Have a pleasant evening","I hope you have a lovely ...

Fresno CA. English (US - northeast) Dec 27, 2023. #28. I think there is a narrow meaning and a wide meaning. The narrow meaning is words like"umm""err""ah" and"uh", that don't express meaning or change meaning. They only prevent someone else from speaking, allowing the speaker to"still have the floor" while finding new words.

Afternoon means strictly after 12pm (midday), ending in the evening when it starts getting dark. In conclusion, it is technically still correct to say good morning after 12pm, as long as the sun has not yet reached its zennith. Whether or not it is acceptable on the receiving end is another matter.

Colonel Saito :"Can you finish the bridge in time?" Colonel Nicholson :"Frankly, the consensus of opinion is that it's impossible. But we'll certainly give it a go. We mustn't forget that we've wasted over a month through an unfortunate disagreement, for which I was not to blame." Shouldn't the blue part be" I was not to be blamed" there?

Los Angeles, California, USA. English - US. Jun 16, 2010. #3. People say both we have reached consensus and we have reached a consensus. The first way sounds more elegant to me. I think people often say a consensus because of confusion with to reach an agreement. In that case the article is obligatory.

I support the consensus that"electric wire" would be better. Indeed, the only things I can think of where"electrical" is commonly used would be in the engineering world. For example, the focus of electrical engineers is different from that of electronic engineers yet both of their disciplines involve working with electric equipment.
