For example, You might need a requirement for 3 credits of American Literature in order to get a degree. However, in order to take American Literature, you've got to pass English I. Therefore, English I is a prerequisite to American Literature, and American Literature is a requirement for graduation. Hope that helps.

After some thinking about this -"Thanksgiving" actually isn't even translated in German, you just use the English word"Thanksgiving", so if you translate American literature to German (or if you need to dub/subtitle a film) you could as well use"Happy Thanksgiving" in a German context.
